Recap and Apologies
I have received my rap on the knuckles! To those who are following this blog you may have noticed a distinct lack of input yesterday! For this I am incredibly sorry. This has been an incredibly hectic time for me and unfortunately yesterday I was unable to post a blog. However this may have provided a little blessing in disguise. I am not someone who believes in coincidence but rather I look to see the hand of Providence at work in all that happens in my life. Perhaps it was only right that I missed my post yesterday.
So where are we? When last I blogged we were onto Day Three of the fortnight with Jahméne’s album Unfathomable Phantasmagoria and were looking at the song Catch the Rhythm which had been given the title of Dancing. In the blog I expressed how as we journey through life we are constantly presented with the opportunity to catch the rhythm and dance. Love is established and this led to my wanting to explore the power of this love.
Therefore what I decided to do today is to fuse the next two tracks into one post. So tonight we will look at Tornado and Down for Love in one. Today of all days is a good day for them!
Tornado and Down for Love – Power
Without a doubt Tornado is one of my favourite tracks on Unfathomable Phantasmagoria. Yes this is a track about love but the focus is placed primarily on friendship. It’s really as simple as that and Jahméne sums this up beautifully with the following lyrics:
“Friends are for each other we don’t need to justify it.”
Friendship really is its own reward. No matter what happens, no matter how distant we are from each other we are still together and our friendship (if it is authentic) can withstand all things. So much so that if one of us were caught in a tornado then we could find each other in this storm. Now I certainly wouldn’t be the sort that would want to put this to the test. However I think it is important to remember that in the storms of life we really never need to go through these storms on our own. Even we know our friends are in need, but they may not know this themselves then we will not stop until we have helped them. Jahméne sings so beautifully about how we will not cease searching for his friend regardless of their situation in life. This is one point which is important today. Tornado really is a very lovely song. What follows is rather appropriate.
Down for Love is an incredibly poignant follow up to Tornado. In my mind I see this picture as being almost like having found your friend or one you love and expressing in the most beautiful form that your love is not something to be wasted. That is must be worked at constantly, that it is worth living for and, ultimately, worth dying for. “No one can have greater love than to lay down his life for his friends.” When you make yourself open to love you allow yourself to be vulnerable and you allow yourself to be open to being hurt. This isn’t something to be shied from but rather embraced. You may get hurt somewhere along the line but remember, “We don’t waste good love!”
Today was a very important day for me. I went to Mass this morning in preparation for launching my book in my home parish. It was a big day. The Gospel reading this morning is one of my favourites. In it we hear the story of the tax collector Zacchaeus who climbed a tree to see Jesus. He went into his hiding place to watch the Lord from afar. Perhaps Zacchaeus was afraid of what a life with Christ would mean. Who knows. However the important thing is that even in his hiding place Jesus sought him out. Jesus actively changed his own plans to bring salvation to the man’s house. The same is true for each of us today. Christ seeks us out in all our imperfection, in all our brokenness and in all our storms and desires to have a relationship with us. Were we caught in a tornado Jesus would still be seeking us. Why? Because He loves us just that much. Because Jesus is down for love. Are you?
We won’t always get it right. There will be times when we hurt others and when others hurt us. But like Zacchaeus we can have second chance. This will form the basis for tomorrow’s blog on our next track, Get it Right which will have the subject Hope.
Have a lovely day everyone.
